Woodlands Family Photographer: My Story & Approach

Hey! My name is Nikole, and I am excited to introduce myself as a Woodlands Family Photographer. I moved here from Austin in the fall of 2024, and now I specialize in documenting the beauty of family life and motherhood photo sessions here in The Woodlands. This blog is a brief introduction to help you get to know me better, understand my approach, and see how I might serve your family.

My Journey to Becoming a Woodlands Family Photographer

I’ve been photographing families since 2017, though for a while my primary focus was on weddings and elopements. After welcoming my second baby, I felt a strong pull toward family and motherhood photography. Motherhood has shifted my perspective and inspired me to create images that celebrate the fleeting, messy, yet beautiful season of raising children. I view my photography as a means to help you savor and preserve this fleeting season of life. So you can remember how it all felt twenty years from now.

My Approach to Photography

My approach comes from empathy and respect for mothers and families. I know booking a photographer can feel daunting; you’re investing time, energy, and money, all while hoping the images reflect the love and connection you already feel at home.

It is vulnerable to step in front of a camera and ask someone to take honest photos of you and your family. I don’t take my job or the trust you put in me lightly.

What I do is not curating photo sessions in which you arrive in your Sunday best, smile stiffly, and then walk away hoping you got something perfect for your Christmas card. Instead, I help you see and preserve the beauty that is already present in your day-to-day life. The beautiful, the messy, and everything in between is welcome here.

The Art Is in the Little Things

The unique personalities and quirks you see in your children when they are in their own element. The nightly ritual of going to the park, because you know it will lift everyone’s spirits. The beauty of the morning light pouring into your kitchen as you burn bacon on the stove. (Definitely not speaking from experience here.) It’s all worth remembering.

The art is found in the beauty of daily sacrifice and persistence. It is not photographed during a 10-minute-long mini session or by meeting me in a random forest after a couple of quick emails. It’s found in slowing down, honoring your story, and documenting what you’ll want to remember 20 years from now.

Connecting With You First

As a documentary-style Woodlands Family Photographer, my first goal is always to connect with you. After you reach out, we’ll hop on a phone call so I can listen to your family’s story and get to know you a little more. I’ll ask some questions to get a better understanding of what kind of story you want your photos to tell.

  • What are you loving most about this season of life?
  • What little quirks make you laugh or tear up at the end of the day?
  • What do you want your kids to remember about this time?

From there, we can brainstorm ideas together and dream about the photographs that will mean the most to you, not just tomorrow but decades from tomorrow.

Planning Your Session

Once you book, I’ll send a custom mood board to help with outfit planning and activity ideas. I always recommend planning at least one activity for your session. So your photos actually document and preserve a new memory instead of being photos of you pretending to be candid.

Some activity ideas are:

  • Bath time
  • Breakfast time
  • Feeding your chickens
  • Playing in the sprinkler
  • Riding skateboards
  • Baking
  • Riding bikes
  • Building forts
  • Fishing
  • Gardening

Activities don’t have to be elaborate, just something that embodies the season you’re in. If you cannot think of anything right now, don’t worry, I will help.

I will make sure you have everything you need for your family photo shoot. So by the time the day comes, you can feel relaxed and excited for your session.

My hope is always that, instead of this being just a photo session, this can be an intentional time you have set aside to spend quality time together as a family.

What Happens During Your Session

During your session, I let the kids take the lead. The best advice I can give is to fill their cup: have fun with them, care for them however they need, and let the rest unfold. I’ll capture group smiles along the way, so don’t stress about whether the kids are looking at the camera, that’s my job. Your only job is to be present with your family. And I’ll be there for anyone who needs direction or assistance.

After the Session: In-Person Reveal

One of the most meaningful parts of my process is the in-person reveal. Instead of clicking through a gallery on your phone, you’ll gather as a family to view your photos on a larger screen, free from distractions. Together you can savor the images and talk about which ones would be stunning as wall art, framed prints, or part of an heirloom album.

I’ll help you every step of the way so your photos don’t get lost in “the cloud.” Instead, they’ll become tangible keepsakes—pieces of art your children will grow up seeing every day and, one day, pass down to their own families.

Why Printed Memories Matter

When your memories are made tangible, it opens the door to hearing your family’s story retold through the eyes of your children. Which is both surprising and delightful. Tangible photographs become treasures you can pass down through generations; they invite you to step away from screens and be fully present with the people you love. This is just barely scratching the surface of why printed memories matter. I could go on about the power of print for days.

Three Commitments I Make to Your Family Photography Experience

To recap: first, your experience will always be my top priority, from the moment you discover my work to the day you hang the photos on your walls. Second, I’m not here for quick, posed smiles, but for creating images full of substance and story, so you never forget what this chapter felt like. And third, your photos deserve to be printed. They were meant to be held, framed, and experienced, not just stored on a phone. Pick up that leather heirloom album, turn the pages, and let your memories come alive again and again.

I’m Excited to Be a Woodlands Family Photographer!

I’m thrilled to listen to your family’s stories and create photos that honor your love, persistence, and your everyday magic. If you’re looking for a Woodlands Family Photographer who values vulnerability, connection, and intentional storytelling, I would love to work with you.

Frequently Asked Questions

What should we wear for our family photo session?
I will create custom mood boards with outfit suggestions for every family I work with. This way, you get personalized outfit guidance, you can feel super comfortable knowing you are wearing clothes that are true to who you are and we can take into account the color scheme of your home so the photos look amazing printed on your walls. As a general rule, though, neutral and earthy tones always photograph beautifully in The Woodlands’ natural scenery.

Where are the best places in The Woodlands for family photos?
The Woodlands is full of some great locations for family photos—lush parks, wooded trails, The Waterway, parking garages, and cozy corners in family homes. There is also a beautiful studio located nearby called The Oak Atelier. We will talk over what kind of session experience best suits your family and I’ll send location suggestions from there. I’m also up for a further drive to locations like Lake Conroe or Galveston Beach. (Check out my guide to Galveston Beach family photos)

Do you offer in-home family sessions in The Woodlands?
Yes! In-home sessions are some of my favorite sessions. From breakfast routines to backyard play, these sessions preserve the details of your daily life that you’ll always treasure. Check out my blog all about getting Candid Family Photos at Home.

How long does a family photo session last?
Sessions typically last around 1–2 hours, depending on the flow of the day and the activities we plan. I want to give your family space to relax and be yourselves without feeling rushed. I do not offer mini sessions because I do not believe that is the best way to serve you.

Do you offer products in addition to digital images?
Every family I work with has the option to order custom wall art, framed prints, and heirloom albums. I believe photographs deserve to live on your walls, in your hands, and in your family’s story.
