Getting candid family photos at home may look effortless in the final gallery. But there is a lot of planning and intention that goes into creating an easy, relaxed session and artful photographs. Planning beforehand makes all the difference. I will guide you through the process so it feels as natural and easy as the final photos look.
You don’t need a Pinterest-perfect home. Your home is beautiful simply because it is yours. The home where your baby learned to crawl, where your toddler took their first steps, and where your family’s story is unfolding every single day. I’ll photograph you in a way that’s authentic to your life, while still being intentional and artful, so your photos reflect your one-of-a-kind story.
Your outfits don’t have to be formal or fussy, but a little intention goes a long way. Aim for coordination rather than matching. You can also keep your home’s color palette in mind so the images feel cohesive (and look amazing when framed on your walls later!).
I help every family who books me with styling beforehand by learning about your space, where you want to hang your photos, and then creating custom mood boards and outfit inspiration tailored to you.
When scheduling your session, consider:
I never expect perfection, least of all from babies and toddlers. Big feelings and unpredictable emotions are part of the story. Please don’t stress about making your kids “behave” during the session. The best photos often come from letting them be themselves.
Here’s what works best: fill their cup, have fun with them, and lean into play. Tickle fights, dance parties, bear hugs, pillow forts. The more fun you have together, the better the photos will be. Don’t worry about whether the kids are looking at the camera. That’s my job, and I know how to catch those fleeting smiles and glances.
One of the most important tips I have is to plan a couple of family activities to take place during your family session. Not sure which activities to include? Think about what you’ll miss most about this season of life twenty years from now. Those are the moments worth preserving. During our planning call, I’ll ask about what you are loving about right now, what feels hard, and the routines or rituals you want to remember. Together, we’ll choose activities that feel meaningful and natural. So you aren’t just booking a photo session, but setting aside time for quality time as a family together.
Some favorites include:
Activities like this mean truly candid family photos at home, instead of photos pretending to be candid at home. You will 100% feel the difference every time you look back at these photos.
You don’t need to deep clean, just try to tidy the spaces where you spend the most time. I typically photograph in the living room, kitchen, or bedrooms, depending on your family’s routines and where the best light falls. If cleaning feels like too much and you want to document the mess, lets play in the piles of laundry on your couch or photograph your kids helping you wash the dishes.
Yes there will be some very light posing. I work to observe how your family naturally interacts and gently guide you into poses that feel like a natural extension of what’s already happening. This could mean snuggling on the couch, or a quiet moment of mom rocking her newborn by the window. It should feel natural and easy to you. I want you to look back in these photos and see your life, not that weird pose I put you in.
Whether you call it lifestyle, documentary, or family photography, in-home sessions will always have a place in my heart. Being invited into your home to document your family exactly as they are is a privilege I never take lightly. It allows me to work as a fly on the wall, which is always where I create the best photographs. Every home and family is unique, offering endless opportunities for creatively documenting their stories. And, as a mom myself, I know how quickly things change. No matter how hard we try to hold onto life as it is, tomorrow always looks different. In-home photos allow you to preserve what you hold near and dear to your heart today.
