What I See When I Photograph Mothers | A List

My job as a motherhood and family photographer requires presence and observation. It’s an honor getting to witness the lives of so many other families and mothers. Here are just a few things that I have noticed, tried to apply to my own life, and use as inspiration when I create photos.

  • I see them breaking generational curses, big and small.
  • Being cherished by her children and husband.
  • Joy can coincide with a diverse range of emotions.
  • Life is too short not to be silly sometimes.
  • The best place for dancing is probably the kitchen.
  • A bad moment doesn’t equal a bad day.
  • Hard does not equal bad.
  • Devotion and perseverance.
  • Learning, growing, becoming.
  • A safe place for her children to land.
  • Someone who sees and loves her children for who they are.
  • Creativity and intention behind making a comfortable space for her children to live in. Designing a life that can be well-lived.
  • Strength. Never not showing up.
  • The constant-ness of care.
  • Revival by small gestures. A home-cooked meal dropped off at the door. An iced coffee. A walk around the neighborhood.
  • She is often held by her husband, sister, mother, or friend. Maybe not all at once or in grand ways, but they’re there.
  • Home-management. Things don’t go smoothly all on their own.
  • Life is probably easier outside.
  • Softness, but also boldness.
  • Sacrifice.
  • Fighting for her own hobbies and outlets. It can be easy to give those up, but they’re worth pursuing even in the margins of motherhood.
  • Relaxing into the pace of living slower and making the most of it.
